The pharmaceutical industry plays a crucial role in providing life-saving medicines, yet its intensive manufacturing processes contribute to the generation of hazardous waste, posing risks to the environment and public health. This study investigates waste management practices in the pharmaceutical sectors of Ireland and India, aiming to identify strategies utilized by the pharmaceutical industries of both countries for waste management and challenges in implementing the sustainable practices. Through a comprehensive literature review, survey, and interviews with professionals, the research addresses gaps in understanding the actual waste management practices and challenges faced by pharmaceutical companies in these two countries. The primary objectives include analysing existing waste management strategies globally, comparing practices between Ireland and India, evaluating compliance with environmental regulations, identifying influencing factors, and proposing recommendations for better waste management. Online surveys and semi structured interviews were employed to collect data from regulatory and quality professionals, as well as pharmacists. The findings reveal distinct waste management approaches between the countries, with Ireland focusing on strict compliance with regulations and professional waste handling, while India struggles with less regulated practices like onsite incineration and landfill. The study highlights the need for enhanced regulations, awareness, and infrastructure in waste management and emphasizes the importance of global coordination in establishing clear and stringent guidelines for sustainable pharmaceutical waste management. Overall, the study offers insights into waste management practices, compliance efforts, influencing factors, benefits, and areas for improvement in the pharmaceutical industries of Ireland and India
