Abstract
This dissertation examined the current and future uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) within the pharmaceutical packaging industry. Two different primary researches were conducted. Firstly, an online survey was circulated to subject matter experts in the pharmaceutical packaging industry in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Secondly, interviews were conducted with the AR goggle implementation project team of a pharmaceutical packaging company. In light of the megatrend Digital Future and the emerging trend Personalised Medicine, the significance of AI & AR is rapidly increasing within the pharmaceutical packaging industry. The secondary research focused on these two trends and the use cases of AI & AR in pharmaceutical packaging. The main outcomes of this thesis are a list of currently used AI & AR tools and their areas of use, a list of AI & AR tools that will likely be used in five years’ time, the arguments both for and against the use of AI & AR tools and a recommendation to the pharmaceutical packaging industry. The current most used AI tools are Large Language Models and the most used current AR tool is a shared first place between AR goggles and holograms. The predicted most used future AI tool is also Large Language Models and the predicted most used AR tool is AR goggles. Based on this data, the pharmaceutical packaging industry is recommended to invest in (native) Large Language Models and AR goggles. It is important to point out that AI & AR tools are not suitable for every company and every area of use and the cost benefit ratio should be carefully evaluated
