Abstract
Background: Medication adherence is a major challenge faced by patients globally. In this modern era, there have been newer innovations developed to enhance their medication adherence rates which could track their real time data and provide optimal support. Objective: The objective of this study is to describe how these newer technology innovations can significantly improve the medication adherence to the prescribed regimes by comparing with the traditional methods. Also, identifying the challenges and limitations and impact on health outcomes when adopting medical devices. Methods: The study unfolds a qualitative and quantitative approach provided with a questionnaire distributed through Google forms to the patients of KIMS Al Shifa Hospital in Kerala, India to identify the patient who are using medical devices and traditional methods for enhancing adherence and it has been analyzed on their general satisfaction, perception, and ease of use. Also, the limitations of these medical devices have also been addressed in this research study. Results: A total of 107 responses was collected through the survey dividing them to medical devices and traditional methods constituting 52(48.6%) were under medical devices and 55(51.4%) were under traditional methods. When compared with each method, by Chi square test, it was found that patients using medical devices are significantly more adherent compared to the ones that use traditional methods. Also, this questionnaire revealed that initial cost of medical devices was the major barrier highlights from this study expressing concerns about affordability which was the limitation addressed. To conclude, this dissertation provides an overview of the newer medical technologies, with a specific emphasis on their effectiveness, benefits, limitations, and possible future directions.
