Beyond the Qualification: Building Career Resilience for International Students Entering Ireland's Life Science Industry

Abstract

This talk addresses the gap between academic success and career entry for international postgraduates aiming at Ireland's pharma, medtech, and digital transformation sectors. It identifies three barriers - unfamiliarity with Irish recruitment systems, a confidence/networking gap, and the resilience needed to handle rejection - and argues that employers are assessing transferable skills and "employer confidence" factors (can this person learn, adapt, follow procedures, communicate) at least as much as technical knowledge. A central theme is shifting students from a past-based identity ("I used to work in hospitality") to a future-focused pitch combining background, transferable skills, direction, and preparation, illustrated with worked examples for career-changers from healthcare and customer service backgrounds. It closes with "The Innopharma Way" - an eight-step career development journey covering industry understanding, CV building, interviews, networking, and psychometric testing - supported by graduate testimonials and recommendations for how Irish educational institutes can build employability, language fluency, safe practice environments, and ongoing post-graduation support.
