Abstract

This study evaluated the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) for process optimisation in Ireland’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, focusing on current applications, assessing organisational and digital readiness, key challenges, and strategic recommendations. A survey of 47 experienced industry professionals was conducted and quantitatively analysed.

The findings revealed the AI technologies, particularly machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and robotic process automation (RPA), are associated with enhanced operational efficiency. Despite the recognised potential of AI for process optimisation, adoption remained at an early-to-mid maturity stage, constrained by workforce skill gaps, budgetary limitations, regulatory complexities, and resistance to change.

The study concluded that AI adoption in Ireland’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is advancing however is hindered by organisational and technical challenges. The research recommends a people-first, governance-enabled, and technology-supported approach, prioritising workforce development, robust governance frameworks, investment in digital infrastructure, and cross-sector collaboration to facilitate compliant and effective AI adoption.

These findings offer valuable guidance for industry practitioners seeking to advance AI integration, thereby improving operational performance and product quality in Ireland’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
